Job Description

The Technician III utilizes proficiency of skills, equipment knowledge and primarily self direction to perform work on assigned wind turbines at an advanced level with minimal to no supervision from higher level Technicians and management.  The Technician III is able to modify (improve, correct) procedures and plans including safety protocol, turbine service and/or installation processes.  They take appropriate action from general direction and can successfully develop / implement robust action plans based upon performance analysis and issue diagnosis of wind plant equipment.  The Technician III is regarded as an “advanced-level” team member on the technician team providing technical direction / oversight and mentorship to lower level technicians.  They are recognized and respected as either a multi-platform generalist or possess platform technical depth and are able to handle all but the most challenging technical issues and customer inquiries independently with appropriate account team coordination / communications.   

 Vestas Americas Service - US & Canada   Responsibilities

  • Acts as a safety champion by intervening when unsafe acts are practiced, promoting / demonstrating safe behavior and practices at all times.  Emphasizes safety through leading by example and adheres to all safety standards and procedures.  Identifies gaps in safety standards, protocols, and behavior as well as safety risks in the operations / environment and implements as appropriate or provides solutions to higher level technical staff and management.  Evaluates situations and develops appropriate mitigations to safely complete work scope including development / approval of Pre-task Plans and defining robust situational isolation protocol.
  • Demonstrates and champions integrity, strong initiative, as well as a focus on safety, execution excellence and overall Vestas quality performance continuously. 
  • Performs quality / performance audits of less experienced staff, processes and environment, identifies gaps, and either takes appropriate action or makes recommendations for areas of improvement. 
  • Performs advanced level operational wind turbine maintenance and/or installation tasks as discovered or as assigned.  This includes proficient operation and use of specialized tools and diagnostic processes (e.g. data logger, Vestas Turbine Monitor, boroscope, thermal imaging).   Documents turbine issues as required and enters data in company system, such as SAP.  Interfaces and manipulates turbine control and mechanical systems to safely conduct service and/or installation tasks.
  • Effectively gathers information regarding turbine issues and performance, diagnoses, recommends, and implements solutions to complex issues and to optimize production output.  Effectively partners with Field Support as needed to ensure success in performance or issue resolution. Communicates pertinent information to key individuals.  Is regarded as starting point in “significant” turbine issue feedback loop including the generation, refinement and validation of Best Practices.  
  • Uses effective structured problem-solving process to perform all but the most complex troubleshooting and diagnostics to include use of technical knowledge, documentation and specialized analysis tools.  Uses comprehensive root cause analysis tools and process to understand and resolve technical issues at both a turbine fixable cause level and participation in systematic root cause corrective action.
  • Independently executes and performs most work tasks according to general direction and operational objectives. Reviews site level documentation, processes and procedures and schedules for applicability and accuracy; submitting recommendations to appropriate project, site or department managers.      
  • May lead 1-2 small projects and demonstrates effective project leadership and delegation. 
  • Promotes and fosters strong team environment not only within technical staff but across partner departments. Assists teammates in accomplishing operational objectives / goals as well as mentoring lower level technical staff.  Is a champion for change management initiatives and enables team spirit and cooperation.  
  • Builds and fosters effective internal and external partnerships.  Interfaces with customer and responds to customer inquiries.   Identifies the need to and will collaborate across internal departments to resolve customer inquiries.  May refer complex issues or customer inquiries to higher level technical staff or manager.  Demonstrates strong customer focus at all times improving their satisfaction and loyalty.
  • This role will require travel, working overtime, including working a flexible and variable work schedule as needed to meet business objectives. 
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
  • Qualifications

  • Three (3) year technical Associates degree or equivalent and minimum one (1) year technical wind turbine experience.
  • Demonstrated advanced use of complex power tools such as hydraulic rams, inductive heaters and diagnostic tools (e.g. advance fluke meter functions, VOB data collection). 
  • Ability to demonstrate strong working knowledge of all relevant industrial safety practices / protocols including situational energy isolation and risk mitigation.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to obtain a Passport.
  • Strong attention to detail and execution excellence.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer relation skills.
  • Able to effectively collaborate with employees at all professional levels, performs as a champion for change management initiatives and ability to respectfully follow supervision.
  • Basic computer operation skills, familiarity with internet based program navigation, and ability to generate and interpret computer data.
  • Strong ability to read, interpret and understand drawings and schematics to develop procedures, validate work activity and ensure that risks are identified and mitigated.
  • Internal candidates must be certified to Task-Based Certification (TBC) level 300.
  •  Additional Required Abilities

  • Ability to read, comprehend and write in English.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders 60-125 meters in height.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry items up to 50 lbs in weight.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, and bend for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to grip and manually manipulate, often with repetitive motion, items such as, but not limited to, hand tools, turbine parts.
  • Comfort working in confined spaces and at heights over 100 meters.
  • Ability to successfully participate in all training courses, including high-angle rescue and training.
  • Periodic walking.
  • Ability to hear and use close range radios.
  • Strong field of vision including visual depth perception and ability to distinguish colors.  
  • Able to work in demanding physical and inclement weather conditions.
  • Comfort working remotely with limited supervisory interaction.
