G4S Youth Services/Davidson County Juvenile Detention Center

• Assists in the organization of instruction work and helps develop effective instructional and work methods. • Assists in preparation of study program in accordance with a standard high school or middle school curriculum that is individualized to meet the needs of diverse learners. • Assists teachers with implementation of lesson plans. • Assists in development of instructional materials for programs. • Administers various educational software such as Mavis Beacon Typing, TABE Test, G.E.D. Pre-test, Languages, Encarta Encyclopedia, Learning 2000, and other programs under the direction of the Principal/designee. • Assists in the coordination of assignments by teachers to the Library/Computer Lab. • Tutors individual students under supervision of teachers. • Maintains bulletin boards in education. • Maintains inventory of teaching supplies and materials. • Maintains student records including student point sheets/grades when substituting or assisting. • Compiles student education behavior points on a weekly basis. • Conducts Student of the Week Incentive preparations and visits. • Administers educational services to C-Pod students when substituting or assisting. • Administers Woodcock-Johnson assessment to eligible students after proper training. • Utilizes Microsoft Office software in completion of tasks. • Assists in preparation of periodic examinations or programs designed to measure participants’ scholastic knowledge and reading ability. • Assists in remedial reading and/or other instruction for select students as determine by the assigned teacher • Assists in stimulating student’s interest in the study program. • Assists in providing counsel and advice to students on problems related to education and vocational goals. • Conducts visual and audio surveillance of activities to ensure custody and security of students and facility. • Participates in group treatment/assessment team meetings related to student treatment/assessment plans, as needed. • Assists in following through on educational components of treatment/assessment plans, as needed. • Serves on various committees as needed and requested. • Communicates effectively verbally and in writing with other staff, students and visitors. • Keeps needed reports, records, and files as designated by Principal. • May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units. • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Lead Educator.

Job Requirements

Education, Licenses and Certifications Required

Bachelor Degree Preferred Associates Degree or Two Years of college courses in the related field may be considered (minimum requirement to qualify to substitute teach). LICENSE(S) Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in the state where the work site is located only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.



Type and Length of Specific Experience Required

Previous experience working with troubled youth preferred Previous experience as substitute teacher preferred



Skills Required

• Knowledge of the basic theories and practices of human behavior and problems associated with group living facilities. • Knowledge of basic first-aid and emergency medical care. • Knowledge of the rules and equipment used in popular games, sports and other leisure activities, and their therapeutic applications. • Ability to maintain an attitude of objectivity and open-mindedness concerning new approaches and methods of dealing with children's problems. • Ability to keep abreast of new ideas, attitudes and skills relevant to working with problem children. • Ability to think clearly and act appropriately in an emergency or potentially dangerous situation. • Ability to grasp various concepts of learning and behavior modification and their application to the client population served. • Ability to participate in recreational activities. • Ability to work with a variety of behaviors. • Ability to tolerate verbal and mental abuse while maintaining a professional demeanor. • Ability to perform appropriate crisis intervention involving student behavior as outlined in PAR. • Ability to complete pre-service and annual in-service CPR and first aid certification training and self-defense and physical intervention training. • Ability to pass drug and TB screening and testing. • Ability to work under pressure; meet inflexible deadlines; set priorities; deal diplomatically with difficult individuals; supervise others; ability to manage multiple programs; lead management teams and work independently. Adherence to the highest ethical standards essential. • Ability to prepare routine records and reports. • Ability to maintain essential records and files. • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units. • Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. Physical Requirements and Environment

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS School classroom; living quarters of residents; various indoor and outdoor facility recreation areas and other areas frequented by residents. Work environment may involve exposure to noise, dust, fumes, dangerous machinery, chemicals, body fluids, falling objects, and aggressive verbal and physical behavior from students. Physical Requirements & Work Environment: • Talking: Ability to express and exchange ideas via spoken word during activities in which they must convey details or important spoken instructions to others accurately, sometimes quickly and loudly. Hearing and Vision: Ability to perceive the nature of sounds with no less than 40 dB loss at Hz, 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication. Work requires a minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction that will enable employees to complete clerical tasks, and observe youth. Dexterity: Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, and be able to perceive the attributes of an object such as size, shape, and temperature. Movements frequently and regularly required using wrists, hands and/or fingers. Physical Strength: Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally. Position is mainly sedentary work (office work), but may on occasion include physical force execution. Employee may be subject to temperature changes, but the employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions as the work is predominantly inside. Language: Ability to write complex sentences, using proper punctuation, and ability to communicate in complex sentences using normal word order with present and past tenses. Processing and Reasoning: Ability to exercise self-control in potentially volatile situations such as in verbal and physical confrontations. Must be able to work and concentrate amidst distractions and noise. Ability to assist youth with problem solving and maintaining self-control in volatile situations.
