Job Description Job Summary:The Buyer is responsible for maintaining current sources and generating new sources of raw material (steel scrap) from the local market to supply plant requirements of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal at competitive costs.Primary Responsibilities:•Purchase ferrous and non-ferrous metals from industrial accounts.•Review and ensure materials purchased are priced and coded correctly before payment to customers.•Maintain good business contacts and favorable relations with current customers (scrap dealers, peddlers, and other suppliers) by regularly keeping in contact to assure meeting plant requirements for ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal.•Maintain a list of industrial accounts producing scrap metal and contact on a regular basis to buy material (includes contact via phone and site visits).•Gather and keeps up to date on appropriate information about the local market for raw material concerning cost trends, availability of supply, and competitor information.•Arrange for the transportation of material to the plant at the most economical cost and to ensure efficient handling of material (includes good communication and working relationship with the transportation department and local operations).•Interact with the Operations Department concerning the grading by quality of scrap metal delivered to the plant.•Interact with scale operations to learn how to operate and input purchases across the scale.•Assist in developing strategic plans for new business to generate new sources of raw material.•Provide monthly reports including estimated inbound volume, type and grade of material, and price structure for material.•Protect and expand profit margins.•Enter and maintain in SAI (internal software system) supplier information and purchase contracts.•Attend viewings of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap bids and auctions.Learn and comply with SOX and antitrust rules and regulations, metal theft policies & scrap acceptance policies.•The employee may be assigned to special projects or required to perform other duties not listed above, which may vary from time to time as determined by management, to meet company needs.Core Competencies:•Ability to identify, grade, and determine quality ferrous and non-ferrous metals.•Working knowledge of basic computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite.•Positive attitude, goal-oriented, and ability to work with minimal supervision.•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.•Dependable, flexible, and ability to work in a fast paced, changing environment.•Ability to multi-task with excellent time management skills.Qualifications:•High school diploma required.•College degree in business or engineering or equivalent business experience desirable.•Up to 5 years of experience in the scrap business or 10 years in a related field, preferably as a buyer, is desirable.Travel Requirements:•Make daily visits to current and prospective new customers.•Visit clients encompassing a 200 mile area with the possibility of occasional visits of greater distances.Disclaimer: The above statements are statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of being performed by employees assigned to this classification.
