Tasks DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: The Bridge & Builder/Helper Driver repairs wooden railroad bridges, trestles, and tunnel supports and repairs or replaces structural steel members of bridges. Performs a variety of concrete and conventional carpentry work. Work is primarily performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Work is done on or near roofs, bridges, and rails. Work on multiple track bridges involves exposure to passing trains. May study blueprints, building plans, or sketches for information pertaining to type of material required, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated. May replace rails or assist crew in rail replacement. Lays out work and marks cutting and assembly lines. Assembles, cuts, and shapes materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, glue, or other appropriate fasteners. Builds stairs, windows, and doors, and lays out and installs partitions and cabinet work. Fits and installs fabricated window and doorframes, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finished hardware such as locks, letter drops, and kick plates. Applies a variety of roofs / roofing materials including the following: hot application, cold application, shingles, and corrugated sheets. Pours ready-mixed concrete and finished concrete surfaces according to specifications. Performs a combination of concrete work tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of tunnels and culverts. Cuts and welds steel members to make alterations. Fastens steel members to cable of hoist. The duties and responsibilities in this posting are representative categories to be used in deciding whether to apply for the position. These general categories do not necessarily constitute an exhaustive list of duties of the position. Basic Qualifications: Prior carpentry, construction, and / or welding experience is desirable. Vocational training in these trades is also preferred. •Must have a high school diploma or GED •Must have a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or am able to obtain one within 60 days of employment •Must be 21 years of age or older •Willing to take a drug test •Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet) •Willing to wear the required safety clothing and equipment (i.e. hard hats, steel-toed boots, safety goggles, etc.), and follow the safety policies and procedures required to do the job in a safe manner •Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English, as well as issue oral instructions clearly and accurately use a variety of communication devices •I am able to stoop, bend and walk on uneven surfaces •I am able to use hand and power tools •I am able to walk, stand, bend, lift and sit for long periods of time Training: Company paid on the job training including preparation, equipment and testing expenses is provided. Relocation: Relocation assistance is not available for this position. Work Conditions: Extreme all-weather conditions; un-even surfaces; safety sensitive work environment. Probationary Period: 60 Days Seniority District / Transfers: Based on the bargaining agreement, transfers are based on seniority and require the approval of the Superintendent of the department. Travel: Frequent and extensive travel over a large geographic region will be required. Shifts/Hours: Work weeks are 40 hours per week. Typically, shifts are weekdays, Monday through Friday during normal business hours. May be subject to on-call, overtime, weekends and holidays. Union: Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Dues: Per the collective bargaining agreement, union membership and monthly dues are required.
